Ozone Season and Central
Texas Air Quality
April 1st through October 31 is ozone
season in Central Texas. It is the
season when weather conditions are right for the
formation of harmful amounts of ground-level
ozone. Ozone forms when nitrogen
oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC)
combine and cook in the hot Texas sun.
High levels of ozone can compromise respiratory
health. Children, seniors, and people
with pre-existing respiratory conditions are
particularly at risk. Even healthy
adults may be affected, especially when working or
exercising outdoors.
Some VOC pollution occurs
naturally; some NOx and VOC
drifts in from neighboring
cities. However, Central Texans
contribute some VOC pollution to the
problem. Our daily activities affect
the amount of ozone-forming pollutants in our air
shed. You can do your share for
cleaner air by trying some of the following pollution
reducing actions:
- Drive
less: bike, walk, carpool, or ride
the bus
- Travel off-peak when
possible
- Maintain your
vehicle
- Fuel your vehicle in
the evening
- Postpone mowing the
lawn until evening, or use electric-powered
equipment
