Programs: Public Participation

Involving citizens, agencies and others in proposed transportation projects, plans and programs.

Public Participation Program

The Public Participation Program sets forth a very general public involvement process for CAMPO. It describes how citizens, neighborhood associations, agencies, and transportation providers within the CAMPO area can become involved in the transportation planning process. This includes transit users, freight transportation providers and major freight shippers, minority, elderly, disabled, and low to moderate-income groups, and any private citizen or agency representative. CAMPO's goal is to provide citizens complete information, timely notification, and full public access to key decisions.

The activities described in the Public Participation Program will be the "minimum requirements" that CAMPO shall comply with. For more detailed public involvement procedures and activities, staff will develop a public involvement process that is project specific.

Creating a New Public Participation Plan:
CAMPO has initiated a Stakeholders Advisory Group and a consultant to cooperatively develop a new Public Participation Plan to replace the 2007 Public Participation Program. Using input from the public, the CAMPO Technical Advisory Committee, and the CAMPO Transportation Policy Board, the following participation needs were identified:
  • Techniques to encourage participation from ethnic minorities and low-income residents.
  • Cater the involvement methods to the magnitude of the project.
  • Find ways to better integrate public involvement in Transportation Policy Board meetings, also considering potential on-line technology.
  • Review social media and other potential solutions to ease public involvement.
  • Coordinating update cycles of outreach methods, such as news media releases and Internet distribution.
  • Consider methods to integrate the public with CAMPO work groups and committees.

  • Comments or questions from the public should be directed to Greg Griffin, AICP at (512) 974-2084, greg.griffin@campotexas.org.
