Background
CAMPO and the City of Buda conducted the FM 1626 / RM 967 Intersection Study to identify near-term and long-term improvement recommendations for a key crossroads in Hays County. FM 1626 functions as a primary north-south route in eastern Hays County, alongside IH 35, while RM 967 serves as a key east-west corridor. The goal of the study was to develop concepts that would improve mobility and connectivity, prioritize multimodal travel, enhance safety, support economic development, and emphasize community identity. The study included data analysis of the study area, concept development, prioritization of recommendations, and stakeholder input.
Study Goals and Objectives
- Improve mobility and connectivity by enhancing traffic flow and reducing delays while strengthening roadway connections for local and regional users.
- Prioritize multimodal travel by ensuring safe and efficient infrastructure for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit riders.
- Enhance safety to address high-crash areas and reduce conflicts between transportation modes.
- Support economic development by aligning with the city’s vision for strategic land use and corridor growth.
- Create a sense of place by integrating design elements that improve aesthetics, comfort, and community identity.
Public Involvement
Community input was an essential part of this study and included three public comment periods and public participation opportunities in person and online. Public survey responses noted high traffic congestion, safety concerns, and general infrastructure improvement needs and were used in the creating the study’s recommendations.
